![]() ![]() The arguably good points about an app store are, as far as I can tell down to two reasons: first, the storefront is "curated", such that nothing will make it onto the platform without some kind of quality control. Epic famously set their cut to only 12% of game sales, meaning publishers pocket an extra 18% of their games sold on Epic Store vs Steam. Steam too takes 30% from game sales, which is the reason EA left the platform and made Origin (to keep that 30%) and stopped using Unreal Engine (so they wouldn't have to give Epic anything either). ![]() Google also takes a 30% cut of sales and microtransactions made on the play store, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo all take similar cuts from console game sales on their respective platforms. From the 30% cut they take from every transaction made on the app store, Apple makes more money from it alone than from all their other product offerings combined. ![]() I can understand what MS are trying to do, and one could on the flipside argue that the platform offers *some* benefits.Īpple has enjoyed unprecedented success with its app store. ![]()
